Russia’s 100-ruble Jacobi stamp pairs an engraved portrait with telegraph designs
Philately NewsJSC Marka issued a 100-ruble stamp on 29 October 2026 for the 225th birth anniversary of physicist and inventor Boris Semyonovich Jacobi (1801–1874). The design combines his portrait with a telegraph apparatus he devised and part of an electromagnetic-telegraph diagram.
The issuer credits A. Mosolov as artist-designer and I. Ulyanovsky for the layout. Its catalogue additionally names A. Krylova as the engraving artist. The stamp measures 30 × 42 mm and is supplied in a decorated-margin sheet of eight stamps and one label, measuring 178 × 112 mm.
The printing comprises 56,000 stamps, or 7,000 sheets. The official production table specifies coated paper, comb perforation 11¾ × 12¼ and offset printing with an engraved portrait treatment and a security complex. The issuer assigns the stamp number 3702.
First-day envelopes and special cancellation devices for Moscow and St Petersburg accompany the release.
Jacobi’s contribution to communications included approximately ten types of telegraph apparatus, among them systems displaying transmitted letters and numbers directly. He also directed early underground telegraph-cable work, including lines linking imperial government offices in St Petersburg.
The issuer’s historical account also highlights his development of electroforming in 1838, a process subsequently used for metal reproductions, printing materials and architectural decoration.
