PISC’s Fiji King George VI study documents stamps, varieties and postal uses
Philately NewsFiji Postage Stamp Issues of the King George VI Period, by Ross F. Duberal and Bryan A. Jones, examines the country’s pictorial definitives alongside commemoratives, postage dues, specimens, booklets and presentation folders. The Pacific Islands Study Circle publication dates from 2018 and draws on the authors’ award-winning collections.
The study includes separate chapters recording relevant material in the Royal Collection and the British Library. Its coverage combines examples of postal usage with proofs, varieties, print quantities and dates where available. It also describes the development of Fiji’s first pictorial definitive issue and the wartime local 2½d surcharge.
Appendices include plating studies of the ½d and 1½d values, Fiji Bomber Fund and Gifts to Britain labels, Savings Bank stamps and wartime cardboard currency used to purchase stamps. The 228-page, A4 book is perfect-bound and illustrated in colour. It received large vermeil medals at Spring Stampex in London and the 16th New Zealand National Literature Exhibition in Christchurch, both in 2019.
