New Zealand Post prepares nine-stamp Lord of the Rings anniversary issue

A newly published philatelic report on 18 August 2026 disclosed New Zealand Post’s forthcoming issue for the 25th anniversary of the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. New Zealand Post’s product information corroborates an issue date of 2 September 2026 and confirms nine gummed stamps, each denominated at NZD 3.60.

The stamps are presented together in a sheet of nine. A parallel group of nine miniature sheets places one different stamp in each sheet, creating two ways to collect the complete set. The miniature sheets use gold foil in addition to four process colours. A presentation pack titled “Nine Companions, Nine Lands” combines the miniature sheets and their first-day covers with further illustrations by designer and artist Sacha Lees.

Each stamp measures 35 by 34.55 millimetres, while each horizontal miniature sheet measures 112 by 64 millimetres. The first-day covers measure 205 by 120 millimetres. Brebner Print in Napier produced the issue by lithography on 106gsm Tullis Russell red-phosphor paper. New Zealand Post gives the perforation as 14.286 by 13.895, a more precise specification than the rounded gauge reported by the secondary source.

The subject extends New Zealand’s substantial postal association with Tolkien’s fictional world and the country’s screen industry. The film trilogy was made extensively in New Zealand, and its landscapes became closely connected with international perceptions of the country. Earlier New Zealand issues have marked the films and their anniversaries, so this release will interest both thematic collectors and specialists tracking the changing stamp formats used for the franchise.

The nine-stamp set has a face value of NZD 32.40. New Zealand Post lists the presentation pack at NZD 59.50 and has opened pre-orders. Unless stocks finish earlier, the stamps and first-day covers are expected to remain available until 1 September 2027, while the miniature sheets and their first-day covers are listed without a fixed withdrawal date.
