NZ Post placed its Christmas 2026 stamp issue on sale on 7 October, presenting the festive season through four native birds of Aotearoa New Zealand. The gummed set features kererū, tūī, kiwi and pīwakawaka among pōhutukawa, Christmas trees and seasonal greetings, while three of the designs also appear in smaller self-adhesive formats. Rather than using a conventional northern-hemisphere winter scene, the issue locates Christmas in New Zealand's summer landscape and makes endemic and native wildlife central to the celebration.

The $3.60 gummed stamp carries the greeting “Peace on Earth” and depicts a kererū, the New Zealand pigeon. Kererū are large fruit-eating birds whose ability to swallow the fruits of native trees such as miro, pūriri and tawa makes them important seed dispersers. Their role in moving large seeds through the forest helps the regeneration of native vegetation. NZ Post pairs that ecological importance with the bird's gentler associations: its soft coo and heavy, audible wingbeats suit the message of peace without reducing the design to a generic dove motif.

The $4.20 stamp uses the line “'Tis the Season” and features a tūī. Tūī are familiar for their dark plumage, white throat tufts and complex calls. Their unusual vocal anatomy allows them to produce intricate sounds, and they can imitate other noises as well as natural songs. They are also significant pollinators of flowering native plants. In the stamp programme, the tūī supplies the most explicitly musical Christmas connection, linking seasonal songs and jingles with a bird heard widely in gardens and bush across the country.

“Joy to the World” appears on the $4.90 stamp with a kiwi. The kiwi is found only in New Zealand and is both a national icon and a taonga, or treasure, to Māori. Its inclusion gives the set its most immediately recognisable national subject, but the design also carries a conservation dimension. Kiwi have become a flagship for protecting distinctive wildlife and the habitats on which it depends, allowing the Christmas message of joy to sit beside a reminder of the country's responsibilities toward its natural heritage.

The highest gummed value, $5.80, carries “Season's Greetings” and shows a pīwakawaka, or fantail. Pīwakawaka are well known for approaching people in gardens and forest, often because human movement disturbs insects that the birds can catch. Their constant tail movement, lively calls and aerobatic flight give the fourth design a particularly animated character. Together, the four species span different ecological roles and familiar New Zealand encounters rather than forming a purely decorative selection of birds.

NZ Post issued four gummed stamps with face values of $3.60, $4.20, $4.90 and $5.80. The complete mint gummed set therefore costs $18.50. Three self-adhesive stamps repeat the $3.60, $4.20 and $4.90 values and total $12.70 as a mint set. The two formats can be distinguished easily: the gummed stamps measure 45.6 by 35 millimetres, while the self-adhesive versions are smaller at 25 by 30 millimetres. All are vertically oriented, preserving a consistent portrait format across the issue.

Tim Garman of Whanganui designed the stamps and first-day covers. Brebner Print in Napier produced the issue by lithography using four process colours. The gummed stamps were printed on Tullis Russell red-phosphor 106 gsm paper and perforated 14.78 by 14.86, with twenty stamps per sheet. The self-adhesive stamps use Arconvert Securpost stock and kiss-cut separation. These production differences give specialists a clear reason to retain examples of both formats rather than treating the smaller self-adhesives as duplicates of the gummed designs.

A horizontal miniature sheet measuring 150 by 75 millimetres brings the four gummed subjects together, while first-day covers measure 205 by 120 millimetres. NZ Post also offers self-adhesive booklets for the $4.20 and $4.90 designs, sheet products, value blocks, first-day covers and
