South African Collectors’ Society publishes The Siege of Mafeking, 14 October 1899–17 May 1900
Philately NewsThe South African Collectors’ Society announced a 63-page study by Nick Harris, The Siege of Mafeking, 14 October 1899–17 May 1900, in a news-index entry dated 6 April 2026. The accompanying notice lists a members’ price of £12. The publication, Study Booklet No. 46, is based on Harris’s display at the society’s November 2025 open conference in Letchworth.
Its contents examine the relief of Mafeking under Lieutenant-Colonel H. Plumer, illustrated with covers sent by Rhodesia Regiment troopers during their advance. It also presents early siege mail and covers sent south and north after those routes had been established.
The study includes the Baden-Powell and Warner Goodyear “Mafeking Blues”, the relief fund, and the overprinting and use of stamps inscribed “Mafeking Besieged”. Ephemera, letters and illustrated Baden-Powell postcards form part of the material described in the society’s notice.
