- Significance: Part of the 1857-61 issue. This stamp was used for postage on newspapers and periodicals.
Rarity: Relatively common, but scarce in very fine condition with full original gum.
Varieties: Exists with different shades of orange-brown, ranging from yellow-brown to deep orange-brown. "Double transfers" (where the design is accidentally printed twice) are a sought-after variety.
Cancellations: A wide variety of cancellations were used, including grids, targets, and "fancy" cancels. "Newspaper cancels" are of particular interest to some collectors.
Condition: Look for stamps with vibrant color, well-centered designs, and no tears or thin spots. Check for "short perfs" (perforations that are cut into the design).
Additional Notes:
It is often found with a slightly blurry impression due to the printing methods used at the time.
The #29 is sometimes called the "Jackson newspaper stamp" to distinguish it from other Jackson stamps issued later.
The large quantity of these stamps printed means that used examples are quite common, but finding them in pristine condition is a challenge.
