bpost marks 50th Memorial Van Damme with five-stamp Ivo Van Damme pane

Belgian postal operator bpost announced on 28 August that it will release a five-stamp pane for the 50th Allianz Memorial Van Damme. The stamps go on sale on 31 August, ahead of the athletics meeting at the Heysel in Brussels on 4 and 5 September. The meeting serves as the Diamond League final and is expected to draw about 70,000 spectators over two days, with leading international athletes including pole-vaulter Mondo Duplantis due to compete.

All five stamps portray Belgian middle-distance runner Ivo Van Damme, whose death in a road accident in 1976 led to the creation of the memorial meeting bearing his name. Each image presents a different aspect of the athlete, including competition and more relaxed moments after a performance. The selection draws on the Memorial's archives and a private collection, according to co-founder Wilfried Meert.

The stamps carry the domestic 1 NAT value and may be used on letters within Belgium. A pane containing the five different designs is priced at €8.15. bpost says it will be available through its online shop and at the Brussels De Brouckère post office. The postal operator has not given a wider branch distribution list in the announcement. The face-value designation makes the pane usable as well as commemorative.

The issue links a modern international sporting event with the Belgian athlete whose memory shaped its identity. That gives the pane relevance beyond general sports thematics: it documents the origin of the Memorial Van Damme and uses archival portraiture to connect the 1976 athlete with the event's 50th staging. The five-photo treatment also offers collectors a compact biographical sequence rather than a single commemorative image.

bpost will launch three other stamp subjects on 31 August: the 200th anniversary of the Royal Observatory of Belgium, rheumatism awareness and notable squares of La Louvière. The 28 August release supplies no printer, printing method, perforation, dimensions or print quantity for the Memorial Van Damme pane, and gives no first-day cancellation details.
