South African Post Office launches 'Love the Post-box' World Post Day stamp issue

The South African Post Office has launched a new stamp issue titled “World Post Day: Love the Post-box”, celebrating the red posting box as a symbol of handwritten communication and South African postal heritage. The issue was launched on 9 September 2026 during the National Stamp Show at Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead, with fresh reporting on the release published on 10 September.

The designs focus on two forms of post-box associated with South Africa's postal landscape. One stamp depicts the country's oldest surviving pillar post-box still in use, located in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape and dating from the late 1850s. Another highlights the smaller lamp post box, designed to bring posting facilities closer to communities by attaching collection boxes to existing street infrastructure such as lamp posts and poles.

Artwork for the issue was illustrated by Rachel-Mari Ackermann, formerly of SAPO's Philatelic Services, and adapted for printing in South Africa by Thea Clemons, Senior Graphic Designer at the Post Office. The issue is supplied as a self-adhesive booklet containing ten Standard Postage stamps and is accompanied by a Commemorative Display Card. The launch took place within the National Stamp Show, which remains open through 11 September before its competitive awards are announced.

For collectors, the subject connects modern stamp design with the physical infrastructure of postal history. Post-boxes are everyday objects that document changing postal networks, street furniture and public communication habits, and the use of a nineteenth-century surviving box gives the issue an unusually direct link between a functioning historic artefact and a contemporary stamp design. The stamps are being offered through selected South African Post Office branches and through Philatelic Services.
