Bernama spotlights North Borneo postal history through award-winning Malaysian collection

Malaysia’s national news agency Bernama published a new philatelic feature on 13 September 2026 centred on collector William Wang and the postal history of North Borneo. Wang’s principal collection covers material from the late nineteenth century through the post-colonial period, including stamps, covers, postcards, cancellations and an 1845 pre-stamp entire.

The report highlights how North Borneo material can document changing postal routes, rates and regional connections. It notes, for example, the use of early two-cent North Borneo stamps on mail within Sabah and to destinations including Singapore, Malacca, Penang and Hong Kong, while mail to Britain could require Straits Settlements postage available at selected post offices.

Wang has exhibited internationally since 2013 and has received major awards for his North Borneo and Labuan postal-history material, including Large Gold recognition abroad. He also emphasised authentication, condition and long-term preservation as central disciplines for serious collectors.

The fresh national-media coverage is notable because it brings specialist North Borneo postal history to a broad Malaysian audience and connects the subject with exhibition philately, provenance, expertisation and the preservation of Sabah’s documentary heritage.
