Japan Post launches five-stamp Moomin and the Ship set
Philately NewsJapan Post released the Moomin and the Ship original frame-stamp set on 8 October 2026, bringing a five-stamp maritime-themed Moomin product into nationwide sale. The retail set contains one sheet of five ยฅ110 frame stamps and a double-sided presentation mount. It costs ยฅ2,000 and is available through 720 post offices across Japan and through the Japan Post online shop. The on-sale date converts the earlier product preview into a current issued postal collectable.
The sheet is built around a bold blue-and-yellow illustration of Moomin characters aboard a ship. Beneath the large scene are five vertically oriented frame stamps featuring Moomintroll, Little My, Moominpappa at the wheel, Snufkin and Moominmamma. Each character receives a distinct coloured background and motif, while the standard Japanese postal frame and ยฅ110 denomination make the designs usable postage. The sheet is therefore directly identifiable as the issued product rather than as general Moomin artwork.
Japan Post connects the set with the Moomin ร Japan Post โLetโs Send Lettersโ project. A letter-writing workshop is scheduled at Kobe Central Post Office on 11 and 12 October, while Moomin photo spots and event flags are planned across Kobe from 10 October to 30 November. The postal set uses that project as its motif, linking the charactersโ maritime imagery with a campaign intended to encourage personal correspondence.
For collectors, the five-design sheet occupies an interesting position between character philately and postal promotion. The stamps can frank ordinary mail at the ยฅ110 rate, yet the double-sided mount and coordinated artwork make the complete set a presentation product. A mint sheet preserved with its original mount documents the official retail unit, while used singles and covers can show whether the campaign succeeded in moving the designs from collectorsโ albums into actual correspondence.
The ship is more than a decorative background. Travel by sea, exploration, family adventure and communication across distance are recurring ideas in the wider Moomin world. Within a thematic exhibit, the sheet can support chapters on fictional ships, childrenโs literature, Nordic illustration, letter writing, maritime culture or licensed characters on stamps. Its Japanese postal context adds another layer by showing how an internationally recognised Finnish creation has been adapted for a domestic mail campaign.
The set has official product or catalogue code 2610000103014. Collectors should record this code because the English title may appear as Moomin and the Ship, Moomin with a Ship or simply Moomin, and because Japan Post released another Moomin product on the same day. The Ship set contains five stamps and a mount at ยฅ2,000; Moomin and Friends contains ten stamps, a mount and two miniature stickers at ยฅ2,400.
Although both products share nationwide distribution, they should not be collapsed into one catalogue entry. Their sheet layouts, quantities of stamps, prices, codes and visual concepts differ. The Ship issue concentrates on five principal figures and a large nautical composition, whereas the Friends issue presents ten narrative scenes and a broader ensemble. Keeping their identities separate helps buyers, exhibitors and database editors avoid mistaken images or incomplete descriptions.
The official artwork includes the full five-stamp sheet. That is the most useful image for philatelic reporting because it shows the denomination, stamp arrangement, character selection and surrounding design together. A generic Moomin illustration or photograph from the Kobe campaign would not establish those details. The official sheet view also makes clear that the large ship scene belongs to the issued postal product rather than being unrelated promotional material.
Nationwide sale through 720 post offices gives the set a different distribution profile from local Japanese frame stamps limited to one prefecture. Collectors in Japan have multiple physica
